Ethnic Types
poster series

about this project: "Ethnic Types" is an ongoing personal experiment about the subjective nature of historical information. Rather than doing the research and finding truths about my ancestors, I decided to lay out what I thought I knew, along with the public’s perception of each ethnic group. Drawing images mostly from Google, and using vague search terms like “Indian,” I tried to blend subjective stereotyped images like the drunken Indian asleep in front of the fireworks stand, with accurate historical information, such as the European expansion symbolized by Wood’s "American Gothic" surrounded by the white picket fence. Thus far, I've completed "Injun" and "Mick," about my Native American and Irish heritage, but I plan to continue the series with "Yankee," "Sheepshagger," and "Limey."

Atomic Survival
Book

about this project: "Howdy. I'm Sgt. Frank Rock, leader of Easy Company. My men and I have fought in every major battle (and more than a few skirmishes) since we dropped in on D-Day. As we rage across the European Theatre, we've picked up fresh recruits to wipe out the Nazi menace. But not every battle is won, nor every soldier saved. Survival is tough, especially when you're fightin' the most evil war machine man has ever faced. I'll be your tour guide through WWII and beyond as we take a look at all the reasons that this country had to invent the ultimate weapon; and what we had to do to protect ourselves against it once the secret of it's power got out to the bad guys..."

Disneyland
illustrations for souviner poster

about this project: I created these illustrations during my internship at AdamsMorioka. They will be used for a souvenir poster which will be sold at Disneyland sometime in the near future. Although the final "official" layout was made by my boss Sean Adams, I also made a few different versions (the last two images) that are composed of the illustrations.

Es Tiempo
Branding/identity

about this project: As part of a sponsored project with USC Norris Cancer Center and designmatters at Art Center, I was part of a team that created communications to persuade Latinas in Los Angeles' under-served communities to comply with clinical guidelines for cervical-cancer screening. Through coordination with focus groups and input from our sponsors, we created a visual identity, a wayfinding system, incentive materials and fundraising materials.

In spring of 2010, we won Best In Show in the Student Catagory from I.D. Magazine's Annual Design Review for our work with Es Tiempo, and our project was featured at their Design Review Exhibition in New York City. In June of 2011 it will be featured at the How Design Conference in Chicago.

See an article about our project published in ChangeObserver.

ween
poster series

about this project: Ween is a rock band formed in 1984 in New Hope, Pennsylvania when Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo met in an eighth grade typing class. The pair is now known as Dean & Gene Ween, respectively. Their music draws from a large eclectic variety of inspirations, with influences as diverse as Syd Barrett, The Beatles, Queen, Butthole Surfers, and Johnny Cash. For this series of posters (advertising a national tour) I tried to capture the eclectic nature of the band's music by designing each poster in a different style. I designed the images in Photoshop and Illustrator, screen-printed them, and then added the type on letterpress.

alcatraz island gift set
packaging

about this project: For the prisoner on the go... or maybe a schoolkid on a fieldtrip; the Alcatraz Gift Set includes all of the items that an inmate would have been given on their first night at The Rock: a uniform, soap, shaving kit, mirror, cup, and the Alcatraz Rules & Regulation booklet. These items are contained in a concrete cell, made to scale of an actual cell at the prison. Under the false bottom floorboard, this inmate has hidden some contraband: such as some photos of his sweetheart, a 1964 issue of playboy, and a shank, just in case there's trouble in the yard.

various logos

cotsen: The Cotsen logo was made during my internship at AdamsMorioka for the Cotsen Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization started by the former CEO of Neutrogena, Loyd Cotsen. By overlapping different typefaces in different colors, I wanted to subtly reference Mr. Cotsen's love of antique textiles.

marakesh:Marakesh is a Morrocan restaurant in Glendale with great food, carpets on the ceiling and belly dancers. For this logo, I drew inspiration from Islamic typography and architecture. I made the logo one color, because it will mainly be seen on the restaurant's to-go menu, which is printed in black.

neiman marcus:Neiman Marcus is a luxury specialty retail department store. The store has a rich history, founded over 100 years ago in Dallas, Texas by Herbert Marcus and Carrie Neiman. The store was first created to bring luxury items to the newly rich oil tycoons. I chose a slab-serif typeface to reference the nouveau-riche Wildcatters and Oil Barons of the early 1900s.

Novosalmon:NovoSalmon is a company in Washington State that has revolutionized salmon farming. They have, through many years of selective breeding, generated a new breed of Coho Salmon that can spend it's entire life in fresh water. In fresh water it is much easier to control bacteria formation, resulting in an overall healthier salmon. NovoSalmon was the first non-wild salmon to receive the designation of "Super-Green" the highest given by the Seafood Watch Program.

the nightlight lounge
poster series

about this project: I worked at the Nightlight Lounge in Bellingham, Washington for about three years, during which time I designed over 300 posters and handbills. I have chosen a few of my favorites to display here, but if you'd like to see more you can see them at Gigposters. Many different genres of music were showcased, which gave me the oppurtunity to design each poster with a fresh look and varied style. With the club's unique location halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, BC, we were able to book bigger bands than you might expect for a town of only about 70,000. Method Man, RJD2, Henry Rollins, Lyrics Born, and Bill Frisell were only a few of the larger acts that played there.

warning: harmful if swallowed
informational display

about this project: I created the "Harmful If Swallowed" hot dog cart as a class project at Art Center College. The cart features information about the harmful effects of eating fast food. Customers can order "burger graphs," which display the protein, carbohydrate, and fat percentages of different hamburgers illustrated as ground beef, bun, and mayonaise. The back of the cart tells customers about the top ten worst food items in America. Surprisingly, most of these gut-bombs come not from traditional drive-thru fast food restaurants like McDonald's, but rather "sit-down" fast food restaurants like Chili's, Outback, and P.F. Chang's, which many Americans do not consider to be fast food venues. Just in case you have already consumed one of these fat-laden dishes, the cart also has unique calorie burning information, such as how many calories you can burn by standing, sitting, or talking.

st/cr: santa teresa, costa rica
t-shirts for a costa rican tourist shop

about this project: I have been working with ST/CR since they opened in 2000. They are a small apparal shop located in beautiful Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Since Santa Teresa is one of the best surfing locations in the world, the tee shirts are designed with surfing in mind, with a strong empahsis on pop culture and appropriation.

dawn of the dead
poster

about this project: I made this poster for the cult-classic Dawn of the Dead as a collaboration with Jonathan Whitehead. We both love zombie movies, and as any zombie fan knows, George Romero's Dawn of the Dead is the best of the best. Jonathan did the original pen and ink illustration, which I then brought into Photoshop and added the shading and color. Originally a 6-color silkscreen (the first image) I have shown here 5 different color variations.
